Inside Collab.Land: The Jail Channel

By: Chibi.

One of my favorite parts of online communities is moderating them

From very early on, back when I was running small communities with online friends, I was obsessed with setting permissions, organizing channels, and slowly working my way up to convince whoever was in charge to let me help with the server lol

That eventually turned into moderation roles

And with it came the jail channel

Now if you're a fellow moderator or Discord admin you may want to stick around, because this is easily one of my favorite systems and I include it in pretty much every community I help set up

Why a jail?

Moderation is a constant balance

You want to protect the space, keep things healthy, enforce rules, but you also don’t want to instantly kick someone out the moment they mess up. Which ain't fun for anyone

So instead of doing that…

You arrest them!

Much more fun

Usually, when someone gets “arrested,” they’re sent to a dedicated channel where you can talk about what happened, why it happened, and why it shouldn’t happen again

Private is probably smarter
Public adds a little chaos 👀

And yes, they may try to bribe you. Stay strong.

What actually happens in the jail channel

When someone gets arrested, they’re given a role with some restrictions

Typically:

  • They can’t send messages in other channels
  • They can't see most of the channels
  • They can’t emoji react, although it can be funny if you let them

The only place they can send messages is the jail channel

Sometimes you even coordinate with other mods. Good cop, bad cop, it's a whole thing

Ideally, the jail should work as a safe space to talk things through while tensions settle

It can also be useful if someone’s account gets compromised. You can isolate them so their messages don’t affect others while they recover access

Keep in mind though: things can get a little dramatic. I've been INSULTED by people (or even harassed by others 💀) but it can also sometimes be unexpectedly wholesome, which is pretty cool 🫶

If you're the arrested person, think about what you've done

It can get… interesting

Sometimes you uncover WILD situations

In one of the communities I used to moderate, there was a VERY trusted mod handling both Russian and Ukrainian chats - which were combined for some reason??? She had been there for years, everyone trusted her, and later we found out she was super mean to the Ukrainian folks the whole time 😭😭😭 and I guess they just accepted their fate cuz no one ever said or did anything about it. Villain behavior right there. But anyways since then we're all more careful and translate all messages lol

(Don't be one of those mods!!!)

How do you set it up?

If you want this in your community, which I highly recommend, here’s a simple setup:

1. Create a “Jailed” role
The role itself doesn’t need permissions. The restrictions come from channel settings

2. Adjust channel permissions

  • Deny “Send Messages” for the jailed role in all channels except for the jail
  • Optionally deny “View Channel” to hide most of the server
  • Optionally deny reacting to messages
Setup example

3. Create a #jail channel

  • Allow the jailed role to send messages here
  • Make sure mods can jump in easily
  • Decide how visible you want it to be

4. Add a bot command
Something like:

  • .arrest / .jail @username
  • .free / .release @username

My preferred bots to do this are Carl and YAGPDB

It should:

  • Assign/remove the role
  • Give context

5. Don’t skip the explanation
Tell them:

  • Why they’re there
  • What you expect from them
  • What happens next

And when all is good, release them!

Why I keep using it

Out of everything I’ve experienced across different communities, this is one of the things I consider a game changer

It won’t fix everything. Some situations still end badly
And some people just need to be banned. Just ban scammers lol

But a lot of the time, it turns what could’ve been an instant removal of a real member into a conversation, and sometimes actual understanding

There are ALL kinds of people in online communities, and things can get chaotic fast, especially when everyone is behind a screen

But systems like this are really helpful - especially for big communities

So yeah, be good out there.

And if you’re gonna be bad, at least get arrested for doing edgy stuff

kk ttyl 😌

Collab.Land token gating and membership verification operates as a read-only application. By signing a message to add a new wallet, you affirm ownership of that particular wallet address. Collab.Land solely accesses public blockchains to verify that a member’s wallet addresses are linked to the required tokens for role or group membership. Collab.Land maintains no access beyond reading public wallet addresses, which are transparent to all users.
